Important facts described briefly below
A valid driving license is one of the most important documents to be checked when renting a car. There are some new rules, passed by European Union, to be followed by driver's whose driving license was issued in one of the EU-membership states.
The new regulation states that driving licenses are no longer valid indefinitely. Please keep in mind this regulation applies to EU-membership states.

What is the deadline for exchanging the driving license?
If your driving permit was issued indefinitely, you will have to exchange it by January 19, 2033 at the latest. Until that time, your current driving permit remains valid. We recommend that you verify the exchange deadlines for particular age groups.
Is my current (old-type) driving license still valid abroad?
If your document was issued in one of the EU-membership states, it is still valid in the European Union. If it wasn't issued in the EU, or if you plan to travel outside the EU, the international driving permit along with the national document may be required, as usual.
Do I need to exchange my driving license if it is already new, and meets EU-requirements?
The new driving license is valid for 15 years. Please control the expiration date.
Why do I need to exchange my driving license?
It is important to have valid information on the document, such as a driver license holder’s photograph. Sometimes, it is not possible to recognize the person on it after a certain time. What is more, it is to enact simplified regulations within the whole EU.
How can this change affect my rental car booking?
At the moment, we are in the transition process, and therefore it won’t affect your rental car booking. Your indefinite driving permit issued in EU is still valid in the EU (until 2033), and outside the union (international driving permit required). However, it is important to follow the official information, and to exchange the document just on time.
After the transition period, a car rental company may refuse to provide you with a rental car. All documents need to be valid in your home country, as well as the destination country.
Can HAPPYCAR help me to acquire more information on that matter?
Unfortunately not. This article is for informational purposes only. Driver's license policy is regulated by the relevant authorities, and HAPPYCAR does not act as a consultant.
